Going away letter to Expedians

Dear friends @ Expedia,

Tomorrow is my last day at EG. It’s been 8 years and we’ve had a lot of fun together. Thank you for all that you’ve given me. I’ve learned so much from all of you. This is an experience I will cherish for the rest of my life.

There are just too many great people I’ve met in my time here to thank in this email. Instead, I thought I’ll look forward and leave you with something to think about…

Many of us spend significant time in our lives searching for meaning/purpose/joy. For most, it turns out to be loving others, helping people and exploring the world.

Being at Expedia for past 8y, I found all 3 here. So many of you have become my close friends; I love you all very much, especially the awesome people at LShop & Brisbane. Travel broadens minds and have huge impact on communities and businesses that rely on tourism. Sure, we’re not launching rockets into space… but this planet is full of opportunities to explore and discover. I’ve reached for that 20% voucher more frequently than I care to remember.

We are all privileged to be here — travel, tech, working with great people.

The best thing we can do with this opportunity is to create value. We are given such a short time in this world. Use it wisely. Love, help communities and explore.

Stop worrying so much about…

  • Processes and who’s allowed to merge PRs
  • Writing perfect schema and code
  • Team boundaries, locations, or time zones
  • Rank, skill levels or your vocation

These things don’t matter as much.

What matters is that we make something amazing for the world.

  • This is your life’s work, put your best effort into it
  • Work as a team because humans are better in groups (gestalt)
  • Embrace diversity and difference of opinion
  • Spend your time making; ship often

Think about your purpose in the world.

Be thinkers. Be doers. Be a loveable bunch of Makers.

Best of luck helping people go places.
